Staff Picks: Shibuya & Ebisu’s Best Summer Festivals
Summer has officially arrived. And when it comes to summer in Japan, nothing captures the season quite like the smell of street food and the buzzing energy of a natsu matsuri (summer festival). Many of our guests from overseas tell us they’d love to experience a local Japanese festival firsthand.
So this time, we’ve handpicked three popular festivals happening in the Shibuya and Ebisu area — all easy to reach on foot from HOTEL GRAPHY SHIBUYA. From a traditional festival rooted in centuries-old shrine history to a distinctly modern, urban-style celebration unique to Shibuya, these are the three festivals you won’t want to miss this summer.
Step outside during your stay and soak up the heat and charm of a Japanese summer.
1.Ebisu Station Bon Odori Festival
Held right in the rotary in front of Ebisu Station, this beloved local bon odori (folk dance) festival draws big crowds every year. Alongside the classic bon odori songs, dancers move together to an original tune and choreography created just for Ebisu. Food stalls line the area, and locals and visitors alike come together to soak up the lively atmosphere.

The glow of lanterns and the wooden dance tower make for picture-perfect scenes — the kind of setting that feels quintessentially Japanese and summery.

- Dates: Friday, July 31 – Saturday, August 1, 2026
- Time: 5:30 PM – 9:30 PM

- Location: Around the rotary at JR Ebisu Station West Exit
- Access: About a 10-minute walk from the hotel
2.Shibuya Bon Odori
Held right in the heart of Shibuya — around SHIBUYA109 and Dogenzaka — this large-scale bon odori festival is hard to miss. For one day, the area near the famous scramble crossing transforms into a massive open-air dance floor. It’s a uniquely Shibuya experience: traditional ondo music blended with modern-day energy, creating an urban festival unlike any other.

This “urban bon odori” could only happen in Shibuya, a neighborhood synonymous with youth culture. Traditional rhythms meet contemporary buzz for a one-of-a-kind, electric experience. Come feel the full force of Shibuya’s summer energy.

HOTEL GRAPHY SHIBUYA is proud to sponsor this year’s Shibuya Bon Odori — keep an eye out for a lantern bearing our name somewhere at the venue! If you spot it while you’re out enjoying the festival, be sure to tell our staff.

3.Shibuya Hikawa Shrine Annual Festival
Just about 500 meters from HOTEL GRAPHY SHIBUYA sits Shibuya Hikawa Shrine, home to an annual festival held every September that traces its roots back to the Edo period. Watching the massive mikoshi (portable shrines) move through the streets to the rhythm of spirited chants is a sight to behold. The shrine grounds and approach fill with old-fashioned festival stalls, where you can wander and snack on takoyaki, shaved ice, and more — a nostalgic taste of Japanese summer.

This festival marks the turning point from summer into autumn in Shibuya. Countless food stalls line the shrine grounds, while children’s and adults’ mikoshi make their way through the neighborhood. It’s one of the liveliest events in Shibuya, offering a genuine taste of tradition and community warmth. At night, the shrine grounds glow under lantern light, taking on a magical atmosphere completely different from its daytime look.
