Boutique Hotel Brand UNWIND HOTEL & BAR Revives a 1959 Hot Spring Landmark in Japan’s Nikko National Park
UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OKUNIKKO – the brand’s third location, following two acclaimed hotels in Hokkaido – opens August 8 around one of Japan’s most concentrated natural sulfur hot springs.
We are excited to announce that Okunikko Konishi Hotel, located in the Yumoto Onsen district of Okunikko in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, has undergone a complete renovation. The property will officially reopen as UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OKUNIKKO on Saturday, August 8, 2026. Ahead of the grand opening, room reservations are now available on our official website.

Rebranding a Historic Hot Spring Hotel Founded in 1959
Since its founding in 1959, Okunikko Konishi Hotel has been a beloved hot spring destination in the Yumoto Onsen area of Okunikko. Located within Nikko National Park at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters, it has welcomed generations of travelers looking to enjoy the changing seasonal scenery and the healing sulfur springs of Okunikko Yumoto Onsen.
Our company acquired all shares of Okunikko Konishi Hotel Co., Ltd. in May 2025. Following the conclusion of its operations under the original name in January 2026, we have pushed forward with a full-scale building renovation and a complete brand restructuring.
While honoring the hotel’s long history and unique natural surroundings, this rebranding injects the signature world of the “UNWIND HOTEL & BAR” brand to deliver a completely fresh guest experience.
An Immersive Storybook World of Deep Forests and Mid-Century Sensibilities

UNWIND HOTEL & BAR is a boutique hotel brand that builds a cohesive world through spaces, dining, and service, with each property featuring its own unique theme. Following our locations in Sapporo and Otaru in Hokkaido, our third property in Okunikko fuses mid-century design sensibilities with the backdrop of lush forests and Yumoto Onsen.
The lounge is furnished with vintage furniture and designed with large windows that look out into the Okunikko woods. At the center of the main dining room, a brick fireplace serves as the anchor piece. Together with the textures of wood, thoughtful lighting, and deep shadows, the space crafts a cinematic atmosphere that makes you feel as though you have stepped straight into a story.
Mid-Century Dining with a Forest View

The main dining room serves breakfast and dinner, featuring grand windows that frame the surrounding trees of Okunikko. The space is defined by its wooden ceilings, herringbone floors, deep wine-red chairs, and a central fireplace.
For dinner, “Forest Lodge Dining” serves a menu inspired by a cozy meal inside a secluded mountain lodge. We provide comforting, approachable Western-style dishes centered around grilled, roasted, and slow-cooked items that you can enjoy in a relaxed setting.
For breakfast, “Forest Morning Table” captures the theme of “an Okunikko morning wrapped in the quiet of the woods.” We serve a signature lodge breakfast featuring warm soups, freshly baked bread, and seasonal fruits and vegetables.
During the evening bar hours, the hotel operates a “light-inclusive service,” allowing overnight guests to enjoy free drinks.

Hot Springs That Invite You to Look Up

The public and open-air baths feature 100% natural, free-flowing sulfur water sourced directly from Okunikko Yumoto Onsen, which is widely considered the fourth-most concentrated sulfur spring in Japan.
The water profile is a hydrogen sulfide simple sulfur spring. When it comes into contact with the air, its color naturally shifts from milky white to a vibrant emerald green. As a rule, our hotel serves the spring water exactly as nature intended—without adding water, heating, filtering, or using chemical disinfectants.
The open-air bath is crafted as a rock pool utilizing stones from Mount Nantai, one of Nikko’s most iconic sacred mountains. Soaking in the warm water and looking up reveals towering conifers and the vast Okunikko sky spreading directly above you.
Guest Rooms Overlooking Okunikko’s Wilderness

The hotel features 46 guest rooms across three layout types: King Rooms, Twin Rooms, and 4-Bed Rooms. All rooms offer a spacious 35 square meters of comfort and look out onto the beautiful nature of Okunikko.
Inspired by the design of a mid-century study and bedroom, the spaces are tailored to support both quiet hours spent reading or thinking, and deep, restorative rest for the body and mind. The 4-Bed Rooms can accommodate up to six guests, making them excellent choices for families and travel groups.
A World of Forests and Lakes Expanding Beyond the World Heritage Site

Travel past the historic town center of Nikko, up the Irohazaka Slope, and beyond Lake Chuzenji and Senjogahara to find Okunikko Yumoto Onsen. Situated inside Nikko National Park at an elevation of roughly 1,500 meters, the area is completely enclosed by lakes, wetlands, waterfalls, and deep forests.
It is a destination where you can experience drastically different natural expressions across the seasons: fresh green sprouts in spring, cool mountain breezes in summer, brilliant leaves in autumn, and dramatic snowscapes in winter. Lake Yunoko sits just steps away from the hotel, allowing guests to take casual lakeside walks or join specialized tours led by local nature guides.

About UNWIND HOTEL & BAR
Built around the core concept of “a boutique hotel guiding you into an extraordinary immersion,” UNWIND HOTEL & BAR shapes a distinct world and service style for each of its properties, offering guests a refreshing escape from daily routines. While respecting local heritage and culture, we translate the unique traits of each region into a cohesive hotel experience, aiming for a stay where guests can fully lose themselves in the brand’s world.
In 2017, we opened our first property in Sapporo, Hokkaido, under the theme of “bringing the outdoor feel of a mountain lodge together with home-like comfort, backed by premium hotel specs and service.” In 2019, we introduced our second property in Otaru, Hokkaido, modernly restoring one of the region’s most iconic historic classic hotels. Both locations offer immersive, out-of-the-ordinary stays from check-in to check-out. In August 2026, our third destination, UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OKUNIKKO, will make its debut in Tochigi Prefecture, celebrating the deep forests of Nikko National Park and the historic waters of Yumoto Onsen.
