Built in 1931 as Hokkaido’s first hotel dedicated exclusively to foreign guests, UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OTARU is a classic hotel beautifully reborn with modern sensibilities. We have been delivering a unique lodging experience centered around the concept of “UNWIND”—the very origin of our hotel’s name—to many guests from both Japan and around the world.

To commemorate our 7th anniversary in 2026, UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OTARU will host “UNWIND MARCHE,” an event designed to give local community members a casual way to experience the charm of our hotel.

For this event, we have combined the unique services and experiences of UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OTARU—which are normally exclusive to overnight guests—with the local charm of Otaru, creating a lineup of content that locals can easily enjoy.

Visitors can look forward to a “Sweets Marche” featuring popular local dessert shops, an “Event-Exclusive High Tea” that reimagines our guest-favorite high-tea style breakfast into lunch and dinner editions using seasonal local ingredients, a live painting session and portrait workshop by Hokkaido-born artist SARU 1, and live performances by a local jazz band based in Otaru.

How to Enjoy UNWIND MARCHE

We will host a “Sweets Marche” bringing together four popular sweets and bread shops loved within Otaru City. Enjoy a special shopping experience as you discover your favorite treats inside our magical hotel atmosphere.

The sweets you purchase can be enjoyed right here inside the hotel. Pair them with our hotel’s original blend coffee roasted by the popular coffee shop “RITARU COFFEE,” and treat yourself to a wonderful snack time at our restaurant The Ball Otaru, known for its beautiful arched windows and stained glass, or on our Rooftop Terrace, which is normally open only to overnight guests.

At The Ball Otaru, which normally serves as our breakfast and dinner venue, we will be offering event-exclusive menus. For this special day, you can enjoy our “High-Tea Style Lunch” and “High-Tea Style Dinner,” which take our guest-favorite high-tea style breakfast and re-imagine it with seasonal ingredients from the Otaru area.

The High-Tea Style Lunch offers an elegant way to savor seasonal flavors in a high-tea presentation, starting with cold dishes like marinated herring topped with locally caught Otaru sea urchin and a chilled cream soup made from Hokkaido green asparagus. This is followed by warm selections including roasted “Kitajima Wine Pork,” a premium brand from Yoichi, alongside Hokkaido vegetables like roasted Inca no Mezame potatoes.

For the High-Tea Style Dinner, our head chef, Mr. Igai, who is deeply knowledgeable about local sourcing, has curated a menu that allows you to fully experience the finest seasonal tastes of Hokkaido. Served in a grand high-tea style, the menu features exquisite dishes such as an appetizer using white asparagus, pan-seared seasonal Hokkaido fish, and an Ezo sika deer steak from Yoichi. While the dishes are spectacular on their own, we highly recommend pairing them with local wines from the Shiribeshi region, meticulously selected by our hotel’s wine advisor. Please enjoy a truly exceptional dining experience woven from Hokkaido’s rich ingredients and unique regional character.

During the day, when soft sunlight beautifully illuminates the stained-glass windows, you can enjoy an elegant and serene moment. From evening onward, the lights are dimmed lower than the daytime session, creating a magical space where the 90-year-old stained glass and floating light fixtures intertwine, setting the stage for you to enjoy these event-exclusive meals.

At our hotel, we operate “UNWIND GALLERY,” which features seasonally rotating exhibitions of works by artists connected to Hokkaido across our 1F lobby and Bar Ignis Otaru spaces. During this event, in addition to viewing the ongoing exhibition “Bloom for me” by SARU 1 (running from Monday, June 1 to Sunday, August 30, 2026), visitors can experience a live painting session and a portrait workshop. The piece completed during the live painting will be displayed in the UNWIND GALLERY throughout the exhibition period. In the portrait workshop, the artist will draw a one-of-a-kind portrait for you, accented with flowers, which serve as the motif for this exhibition.

■ Live Performances by a Local Jazz Band

Inside the elegant space of our restaurant The Ball Otaru, the local jazz band “OTARU NOMASARU TRIO” will deliver 30-minute live performances at 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Relax and enjoy the smooth sounds of this sophisticated piano trio within our magical hotel atmosphere while savoring your meals, sweets, or wine.

Our popular wine service, usually held from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, is getting a special upgrade to celebrate our 7th anniversary. We will offer a wider selection than usual and extend the service by an extra hour.

We will present an exceptional selection of premium free wines that showcase the very best of Hokkaido, featuring Otaru’s own “OSA WINERY” alongside “Domaine Bless,” “Yamada Do,” and “Camel Farm.” Please come and fully immerse yourself in these charming Hokkaido wines inside Bar Ignis Otaru, a space beautifully illuminated by our iconic back-shelf lighting.

UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OTARU

Originally built in 1931 as the “Former Etchuya Hotel,” this property was the first hotel in Hokkaido dedicated exclusively to foreign guests. Having lived through a rich history as a military officer’s club during World War II and being later requisitioned by the US military, this structure is designated as a Historic Building by Otaru City and named one of the “33 Modern Industrial Heritage Sites” by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
