【Roofrop Movie Night】July’s Movie is “Licorice Pizza”

by Atsuraelu

Hello from HOTEL GRAPHY NEZU!

A Summer Movie Night with a Twist — Now at Hanazono Alley

This July, our popular Rooftop Movie Night returns with a special twist. For one night only, the event will be held at the rooftop of Hanazono Alley, offering a fresh atmosphere while keeping the cozy charm you know and love.

Please note: The venue will be different from usual this month. For full details, please check the event information page.

At HOTEL GRAPHY NEZU, Rooftop Movie Night is a seasonal tradition held every third Saturday during the warmer months. Each month, our staff carefully selects a film that pairs perfectly with the night sky and a laid-back summer vibe. Guests can enjoy the movie along with an all-you-can-drink selection of beverages in a relaxed, open-air setting.

Though the location is changing this time, the experience remains just as special. Join us at Hanazono Alley for a unique take on your favorite summer evening escape.

Tucked between the University of Tokyo and Tokyo University of the Arts, Hanazono Alley is a unique creative hub. Once the “Hanazono-ryo” dormitory for Akahudado employees—an iconic presence in the Ikenohata area—it has been thoughtfully renovated into an incubation space that fosters next-generation creative projects and communities.

This special Rooftop Movie Night offers more than just a film screening. You’ll enjoy a refreshing summer breeze, drinks, and a new view of the city—far from the usual cinema experience.

Settle in on the rooftop, relax with a drink, and watch the movie at your own pace. Chat with the person next to you, enjoy some food, or simply soak in the casual summer atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to unwind and enjoy a night of culture and connection.

We hope you’ll join us for this one-of-a-kind evening.

We will be screening “Licorice Pizza” on Saturday, July 19th.

This month’s feature is “a film where a sweet, awkward youth makes your heart feel just a little bit lighter.”

In this season when the heat can make both mind and body a little sensitive, a story that affirms those “not-so-perfect” days with its kindness, and shows how we can be saved by someone’s presence, is sure to resonate deeply.

Synopsis▼
In the San Fernando Valley of the 1970s, Gary, a 15-year-old former child actor, and Alana, a woman in her 20s trying to find her way in life, meet and form a strange yet straightforward relationship. It follows Gary’s direct feelings, having fallen in love the moment they met, and Alana’s wavering heart, filled with anxiety about her future.

From selling waterbeds to working in the film industry and volunteering for a mayoral campaign, the two struggle in their own worlds, their paths repeatedly crossing, separating, and coming together again. Even when blinded by the light, I can’t look away from you—the film traces the trajectory of their youthful days, as they are drawn to each other despite their crossed paths.

Of course, hotel guests are welcome, and we also warmly welcome everyone from the local community. Why not enjoy a movie experience on the rooftop, drink in hand?

We sincerely look forward to seeing you there.

Located between the University of Tokyo and the Tokyo University of the Arts, Hanazono Alley is an office space that was reborn in February 2020 as a regional creative community to support next-generation creative projects and teams. It was formerly the “Hanazono-ryo,” the employee dormitory for the Akahudado company, which had been a fixture in the Ikenohata community for 50 years. It features a cafe for both locals and visitors, and on the top 5th floor, it hosts art projects by artists and curators that pose new questions to society.
