Strolling Through Yanaka Ginza: An Autumn Food Walk Near HOTEL GRAPHY NEZU

Hello from HOTEL GRAPHY NEZU!
As the intense summer heat finally begins to ease, we can’t help but look forward to the cooler days of autumn. And when autumn arrives, enjoying casual bites while strolling through the city feels especially rewarding.
For this blog, we’ve selected some of our favorite eat-as-you-walk spots in Yanaka Ginza, a nostalgic shopping street just a short walk from the hotel.
If you haven’t seen it yet, we also recommend checking out our previous sweets guide and exploring both together.
Yanaka Ginza

Yanaka Ginza is a well-known spot for eating on the go in the Yanaka and Nezu area of Tokyo. You can get there from HOTEL GRAPHY NEZU in about a 15-minute walk. The shopping street is about 170 meters long and is lined with all sorts of places that will make you want to stop, from delicatessens with the delicious smells of croquettes, minced meat cutlets, and yakitori, to sweet shops with Japanese confections and gelato.
This time, we will introduce three shops where you can enjoy eating while you walk.
① CHAYA Matsuo

CHAYA Matsuo is a Japanese sweet shop you’ll want to stop by during your walk through Yanaka Ginza. Its charm is that it serves freshly-made mochi and dango with each order, while still valuing old-fashioned, simple flavors.
The style of being able to easily eat your sweets right in front of the shop is perfect for eating on the go.

We especially recommend the “Freshly-Made Mochi Dango” (from ¥300). Since they are made after you order, you can enjoy soft and stretchy mochi. A classic favorite is the “Isobe” (image on the right), which has a savory scent of soy sauce and roasted seaweed. While simple, the sweetness of the mochi really stands out.
Another recommendation is the “Karami Mochi” (image on the left). With the refreshing taste of grated radish and soy sauce, it’s light enough to eat up in an instant even in the middle of a food walk.
Both are simple, but you can feel the special luxury that only comes from freshly-made mochi.

② Yanaka Shippoya

“Yanaka Shippoya” is famous for its stick-shaped baked donuts that look like cat tails. They use domestically-sourced and additive-free ingredients as much as possible, such as flour, sugar, and baking powder, making them perfect for eating while walking or as a souvenir.

This is the look after just one bite. The most popular flavor, “Tora” (Tiger) (right, 150 yen), is made with a black cocoa batter, has plenty of white chocolate chips, and features a tiger-stripe pattern. The contrast between the slightly bitter cocoa flavor and the sweet chocolate chips creates a wonderful taste. The seasonal limited pumpkin flavor (left, 180 yen) also has an irresistible autumnal pumpkin taste.

③ Maruhatsu Fukushima Shoten

Maruhatsu Fukushima Shoten is a shop that offers a wide variety of seasonal seafood, including clams, shijimi clams, oysters, shrimp, and crab, as well as river fish like eels and loaches. Many people are tempted to stop at this popular shop by the savory smell of scallops, whelks, and squid being grilled right outside the storefront. You will be drawn in by the old-fashioned, classic atmosphere that is unique to this long-established shop.

They also sell grilled items at the front of the shop, and it is highly recommended that you eat them right there. One of the most popular items is the grilled squid (¥600), which has an irresistible aroma of the sea and a savory grilled flavor. There are tables in front of the shop, so you can add whatever seasonings you like and enjoy a small feast of seafood.
