A Traditional Japanese Breakfast Experience at Kappo Komeo, Just Minutes from THE LIVELY TOKYO AZABUJUBAN

Hi there, this is Han from the Front Desk at THE LIVELY TOKYO AZABUJUBAN.

Today, I’d love to share my visit to Kappo Komeo, a Japanese restaurant that opened in November 2023, just a 5-minute walk from the hotel.

Founded by Komeo—widely recognized from the martial arts event Breaking Down—this intimate eatery brings out the natural flavors of rice and showcases the depth of Japanese cuisine using carefully curated ingredients and heartfelt preparation.

Inside the Restaurant

Located near Azabu-Juban Station, the entrance leads you downstairs to a cozy basement-level space. The interior is calm and inviting, with only 10 counter seats, offering an intimate yet spacious ambiance.

From your seat at the counter, you can watch the chef’s skillful preparation up close, making the dining experience all the more engaging and relaxed.

★ Breakfast Menu – “Fumizuki Morning Meal” ★
▪ Five Appetizers

A visually stunning selection of five seasonal starters. Each bite is crafted with precision, showcasing delicate flavors and fine technique.

▪ Local Vegetable Salad

Fresh vegetables, vibrant in color and texture, are served with just a touch of salt instead of dressing—highlighting the natural sweetness and crispness of each ingredient.

Niehashi (Freshly Cooked Rice)

The freshly steamed rice is firm and fragrant, releasing a pleasant aroma with every bite.

▪ Main Plate

The upper tier features beautifully crafted dishes: sashimi, tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet), seaweed from Ariake Bay, and house-made pickles.

The center includes fluffy rice accompanied by natto, yuba (tofu skin), grilled fish, and seasonal corn tempura. Personally, the standout dishes were the large-bean natto—surprisingly flavorful even for someone who rarely eats natto—and the corn tempura, which highlighted the sweetness of seasonal corn when enjoyed with a pinch of salt.

The upper-right corner of the tray held the miso soup, made that day with fresh figs.
This unexpected combination was a pleasant surprise—the gentle sweetness of fig harmonized beautifully with the savory miso.

▪ Rice – Second Serving

The first bowl featured fluffy white rice, moist and full of natural aroma and sweetness.

For the second serving, I chose black rice. Its chewiness and rich flavor provided a satisfying contrast, with a subtle sweetness and deep, layered taste.

▪ Closing Dish – Yuba Meshi

A luxurious finishing touch: thick egg yolk and rich-flavored yuba are combined and poured over hot rice. The creamy egg and silky tofu skin melt together perfectly, creating a comforting and flavorful finale.

▪ Matcha & Seasonal Sweet

To close the meal, guests enjoy a hands-on experience whisking matcha using a bamboo whisk (chasen), paired with a traditional Japanese sweet.

Not too sugary, the sweet complements the rich matcha flavor beautifully—making for a delightful end to the meal.

Kappo Komeo

Breakfast service at Kappo Komeo begins at 10:00 AM, making it perfect for a relaxed morning or an early lunch. It’s a luxurious way to enjoy authentic washoku (Japanese cuisine) right in the center of Tokyo.

The course offers great variety and will leave you feeling full and satisfied. While reservations are required, you may be able to get a seat if there’s a same-day cancellation—so it’s worth calling to check availability.

This experience is highly recommended for rice lovers or anyone looking to savor the true essence of Japanese food.
