A 10-Minute Walk to Spice: Discover Qmin in Sapporo
Today, we’re featuring “Qmin,” the only restaurant in Sapporo where you can experience authentic Indian home-style Biryani. Biryani is a spiced rice dish beloved throughout India, with unique flavors that vary from household to household.
The owner, Mr. Okuyama, traveled to India and stayed with local families to learn various regional styles before opening his specialty shop here in Sapporo. He also participates in numerous events, making Qmin a “hidden gem” loved by both curious newcomers and dedicated regulars!
The menu features two classic styles and one monthly seasonal special. These rotating flavors change about once a month and have developed a loyal following of their own. For this visit, we decided to try all three!
They use Basmati rice, a premium long-grain variety from India. The dish is served on a large platter where you mix the rice with three types of sauces and traditional condiments. Since the rice itself is already seasoned and cooked with various ingredients, you can enjoy it as is, or mix in the sauces to customize the spiciness and flavor profile to your liking! Plus, with various extra toppings available, you’ll never get bored of the taste.
Their desserts are also a huge hit on social media, so we couldn’t resist ordering three different kinds. It turns out the owner is a former pastry chef! These authentic sweets were the perfect way to wrap up the meal.
Everything was delicious from start to finish. The owner and the staff are incredibly friendly, and we even had a great time chatting with them.
