Finding ‘a taste you’ll keep coming back for’ on your travels. A warm afternoon at Otaru Dining NO NAME.

When you think of Hokkaido or Otaru in particular, sushi and fresh seafood are probably the first things that come to mind.

And yes, the seafood here is absolutely incredible. But Otaru has another side that often goes unnoticed: a quietly thriving Western cuisine scene, with some truly standout restaurants tucked throughout the city.

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on one of our favorites — Otaru Dining NO NAME, a beloved Western restaurant just a 6-minute walk from UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OTARU.

A warm, welcoming exterior — and a cozy interior to match.

▲ Otaru Dining NO NAME — Exterior

The exterior is understated and calm, softened by a charming display of flowers that catches your eye as you approach.

Step inside, and you’re immediately wrapped in warmth — the kind of unpretentious, wood-toned coziness you’d hope to find in a classic neighborhood bistro.

A small restaurant where time slows down.

The space is intimate, with just a counter and a handful of tables. It’s small — but that’s exactly what makes it feel special.

Now, you might be wondering about the name. NO NAME — what’s the story there?

The owner, known warmly as “Master,” was the founder of Uminekoiya, a legendary Western restaurant that was a beloved fixture in Otaru for 40 years. After closing Uminekoiya in 2016, he opened this new spot the following year.

The name NO NAME comes from his belief that no name could ever surpass Uminekoiya. Rather than trade on a reputation, he chose to let the food — and the warmth of the place — speak for itself.

It’s a philosophy that clearly resonates. The restaurant has a devoted local following, and the atmosphere is always calm and quietly welcoming.

The Master himself is wonderfully approachable — the kind of person who naturally strikes up conversation with anyone who walks through the door. We even watched him chat cheerfully with visiting tourists, asking where they’d come from. When a place makes you feel that welcome, it’s hard not to think, “I want to come back.”

Don’t miss the art on the walls.

The paintings displayed on the walls are the work of HiNA, an oil painter — and the Master’s daughter.

HiNA has previously exhibited at UNWIND GALLERY, the in-hotel gallery at UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OTARU, where she held a solo exhibition titled Explore the Magic of HiNA’s Art at UNWIND GALLERY – Free Admission!

※ HiNA’s exhibition ran from March to May 2025 and has since closed.

The piece hanging in the restaurant is her graduation work — a striking canvas at size 100 (roughly 162 × 130 cm). It adds a layer of artistry to the dining experience, making the space feel even more thoughtfully curated.

One sip and you’re hooked — the house-made ginger ale.

▲ Left: Shandy Gaff / Right: House-made Ginger Ale

One of the restaurant’s signature offerings is their house-made ginger ale. It has a bold, genuine ginger flavor without being too sharp — refreshing, easy to drink, and genuinely delicious.

The Shandy Gaff made with it is equally impressive — even one of our staff members who doesn’t usually drink beer found it smooth and well-balanced. Not too sweet, pairs beautifully with food, and the kind of drink that has you reaching for another glass before you know it.

The dish you absolutely have to try.

▲ Napolitan — A recipe carried over from the Uminekoiya days

The garlic hits you first — that irresistible aroma that fills the air as it cooks, the kind that makes your stomach growl before the plate even arrives.

The Napolitan is generously loaded with shimeji mushrooms, eggplant, green pepper, onion, sausage, and chunks of ripe tomato. It’s remarkably hearty for a pasta dish.

The sauce isn’t the usual ketchup base — it’s built on a proper tomato sauce with a gentle kick of chili, giving it a more grown-up, layered flavor. The portion is substantial enough to share, and still satisfying.

This Napolitan has been on the menu since the Uminekoiya days. One bite, and it’s immediately clear why it’s endured for so long.

The dish that truly moved us:Beef Stew

▲ Bottom right: Beef Stew

Of everything we tried, the beef stew left the deepest impression.

Three generous chunks of beef — slow-cooked until impossibly tender, the kind that falls apart at the touch of a spoon. Every bite brings an involuntary smile.

The sauce is rich and deeply flavored with red wine, finished with the kind of care you only find at a restaurant that truly takes pride in its craft. Daikon radish and carrots round it out, soaking up all that savory depth.

We heard that many regulars like to mop up the sauce with bread — something we’re absolutely trying next time.

Otaru seafood meets Western classics — all under one roof.

Alongside the Western menu, NO NAME also offers dishes that showcase Otaru’s finest seafood — so if you’re torn between craving fresh fish and a hearty bistro meal, this is the place to be.

Soft background music plays throughout, making it easy to linger — catching up on conversation, sketching out the next day’s plans, or simply enjoying the pace of it all.

Whether you wander in on a whim or make it the destination for a special dinner, NO NAME delivers every time.

Warm, genuine, and rooted in Otaru’s character — Otaru Dining NO NAME is one of those places that stays with you long after the meal is over. We hope you get the chance to visit.
