Lifestyle hotel THE LIVELY TOKYO AZABUJUBAN will host an art event in collaboration with artist Hayato Teraguchi from Thursday, August 27 through Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
An art experience open to more than just hotel guests, set in the extraordinary space of the hotel lounge
The event takes over the 2nd-floor lounge at THE LIVELY TOKYO AZABUJUBAN with a wide range of content, including an exhibition themed around “The Shape of Buddhism,” interactive art installations, and original cocktails available at the bar.
On opening night, guests can enjoy live painting using materials salvaged from the hotel itself, along with DJ performances at a special opening party. Throughout the event, whenever the artist is on-site, visitors can also take part in an abstract portrait-making experience — a chance to connect with the artist and walk away with a one-of-a-kind piece of art made just for them.
True to the hotel’s concept as “a place where people, information, and opportunities gather from around the world,” this event is open to everyone, not just hotel guests. During the event period, LIVERALLY, the 2nd-floor lounge normally reserved for guests only, will be open to the public — so locals and anyone curious about the hotel are welcome to drop by. ■ “The Shape of Buddhism” — An Exhibition That Lets You Feel Buddhist Philosophy Intuitively
This exhibition reinterprets Buddhist philosophy through the lens of contemporary art, incorporating ideas from quantum mechanics and epistemology into both flat and three-dimensional works, alongside new pieces created specifically for this event. Rather than tracing traditional Buddhist imagery, the exhibit presents Buddhism as “a living philosophy for today” — an intuitive art experience for visitors from Japan and abroad alike.
All exhibited works are available for purchase. Take your time viewing the pieces up close, and find the one that speaks to you. Prices start from ¥11,000 (tax included) per piece.
■ Interactive Art Made from Reclaimed Materials
This installation transforms discarded materials and junk into upcycled art, incorporating construction materials and retired speakers into interactive pieces.
Visitors can experience three interactive works that respond with sound and light when touched.
■ Live Painting Using Materials from the Hotel Itself — An Opening Party Where Music Meets Art
The opening party kicking off the event features a live painting session, in which materials discarded from the hotel are incorporated into a brand-new work created on the spot. Throughout the event, the artist will create and sell live abstract portraits, each inspired by the impressions and personality he senses from the sitter in the moment. Expressed through color and form, every portrait is entirely unique. Enjoy the chance to connect with the artist and come away with a piece of art that exists nowhere else in the world.

At THE LIVELY BAR TOKYO AZABUJUBAN, located on the hotel’s top floor, a special cocktail inspired by the art event will be available throughout the event period.
“En” (Connection) — ¥1,200 (tax included)
Built on a base of Edo Kaijo sake, this delicate and refreshing cocktail blends the sansho pepper-scented liqueur “Bear’s Book” with grapefruit and yuzu — a showcase of Japanese ingredients working in harmony. To finish, guests choose from four edible flowers to add their own personal touch of color. Much like the Buddhist concept of “engi,” or interconnected causes and conditions — which inspired this event’s theme — this cocktail comes together through the layering of many different elements and connections.

Hayato Teraguchi
Born in 1993.
Working around the theme of the “inner self,” Teraguchi draws inspiration from Buddhism and quantum mechanics, expressing the individuality generated by “waves” — the smallest unit of matter — through his art. He’s also drawn to the way artificial and natural elements coexist in discarded materials, and has released many three-dimensional works made from reclaimed junk. Live painting is a signature part of his practice, and his work has taken him everywhere from club events to offerings at Buddhist temples.
