Discover Hidden Shibuya & Ebisu: Tokyo’s Calm Hideaway Spots

Shibuya is often known for its crowds and bright city lights, but just beyond the busy streets, you’ll find cozy and sophisticated izakayas and bars tucked away in quiet corners, waiting to be discovered.

We will introduce three “hidden gem” spots perfect for a relaxed night out.

A Secret Izakaya That Starts with a Phone Call|Kurodenwa

First up is Kurodenwa, located in Ebisu, just one stop from Shibuya. Along the historic Beer Slope, an area known for its excellent restaurants. Open a regular-looking apartment door, spot a black phone under the light, pick it up — and suddenly you’re inside a warm, stylish izakaya.

We chose counter seating, ideal for solo diners or couples. From their selection of craft beers sourced from across Japan, we tried a unique apple-pie–flavored brew, an exciting start to the evening.

Below are three of Kurodenwa’s must-try signature dishes.

Kurodenwa’s signature Beef Broth Oden is simmered for 78 hours, creating a rich, comforting broth full of flavor. The platter includes their famous oversized daikon radish, plus classics like beef tendon and egg, all soaked in savory umami.

Served nice and hot, it’s the perfect cozy dish—especially on chilly days—and goes great with a drink.

At first glance, the “Black!? Potato Salad” (¥880) stands out with its jet-black color, made with squid ink. Mixed into creamy potato salad and finished with a rich egg yolk on top, this playful dish is surprisingly smooth and flavorful. It may look unusual, but one bite is all it takes to fall in love.

The Crispy Bite-Sized Beef Gyoza (¥990) features juicy beef wrapped in thin, crispy skins. Each bite bursts with flavor, and two accompanying sauces allow guests to enjoy different taste profiles.

A Cocktail Izakaya by a Renowned Bar|Esujiro (SG Low)

Our second destination is Esujiro (SG Low), located just a four-minute walk from the hotel. With no visible signage and discreetly situated on the second floor, it truly embodies the concept of a hidden cocktail izakaya.

Inside, subdued lighting and refined interiors create an elegant atmosphere.  Guests seated at the counter can enjoy conversations with skilled bartenders while ordering personalized cocktails.  Notably, the complimentary appetizer is a martini—an unexpected touch that sets the tone for the evening.

Despite its appearance, the Ramen Potato Salad (¥880) is not ramen at all—potato salad is hidden beneath the toppings.

For the best experience, mix everything together before rebuilding with Chashu and egg. The ramen-style seasoning pairs surprisingly well with creamy potatoes, making this dish highly addictive.

A social-media favorite, the Mentaiko Truffle Mac & Cheese (¥1,870) features rich mac & cheese topped with luxurious cod roe at the center. Creamy, savory, and perfectly balanced, it becomes even more enjoyable with a dash of the house-made Tabasco for a spicy twist.

The “Rolled Cabbage?” Dessert (¥880) was perhaps the biggest surprise of the evening. While cabbage as dessert may sound unusual, this creative plate turns curiosity into delight and is best enjoyed alongside one of Esujiro’s signature cocktails.

A Premium Record Bar Hidden Behind Coin Lockers|A10

Our final recommendation is A10 in Ebisu. Here, expertly curated soul and jazz vinyl fills the space while guests enjoy sophisticated mixology cocktails.

The entrance appears to be ordinary coin lockers.

Step through the hidden door and descend underground to discover an elegant bar surrounded by beautiful music.

The perfume-inspired cocktail HINOKI at that time (¥1,650) is as beautiful as it is delicious. Made with Kyoto dry gin “Kinobi” and infused with premium Yoshino hinoki wood, it’s served with cute scarf and pearl accessories—making the whole experience feel extra special. With its soft, woody aroma, it really does feel like you’re sipping on perfume.

We also recommend the refreshing Olive Highball (¥990 / right in photo) and the tropical Tropical Espresso Martini (¥1,650 / left in photo), crafted with fruit purée for a smooth, exotic finish.

Enjoy refined cocktails surrounded by exceptional sound.
