Experience Local Osaka! Explore Shinsekai, Just a Short Train Ride from THE LIVELY OSAKA HONMACHI

Hello from THE LIVELY OSAKA HONMACHI!

Today we’d like to introduce a place where to experience typical, deep, old Osaka.

“Shinsekai” is a must see spot in Osaka, just one train ride away from the closest station to the hotel, Sakaisuji-Hommachi. After taking the Sakaisuji line of the Osaka metro, get off either at Ebisucho or Dobutsuen-mae station.

A few minutes walk from either station, and you’re in Shinsekai!
Let’s see what to do once there!

1. Travel back in time to the “Showa” era (post-war to late ‘80s) with nostalgic games

In addition to delicious food, Shinsekai offers many places where to play with retro games, such as the very popular smart ball (a vintage Japanese game where the object is to knock all the balls in the holes of the playfield), target practice, both with guns and Japanese bows, super ball scooping, old arcade games, and much more.

Relive your childhood through these vintage games!

2. Greeting Billiken

Rubbing the soles of Billiken feet is a must!
There is a big, golden, shiny Billiken in the middle of Shinsekai.

But why rub its feet?
Apparently, with his short hands and big belly he’s unable to reach the soles of his feet, so rubbing them for him makes him very happy. This is the reason why the legend says that Billiken will grant the wishes of those who rub his feet.

3. Enjoy Osaka gourmet food at long established restaurants

Look for restaurants in Nan’yodori shopping street, named after the Southern sunlight hitting the street, also known as “Jan-jan yokocho”. The name, given to the street after World War two, is onomatopoeic, mimicking the sound of shamisen (Japanese string instruments) and drums played in the stores to attract customers.

There are many retro restaurants and stores here, some very quirky, so much so they will have you unconsciously smiling.

Shinsekai is also famous for being the birthplace of kushikatsu (fried foods on a stick), and lots of restaurants offer this specialty. Each has its own recipe for the batter, as well as frying peculiar or unique ingredients. It is difficult to choose one, so try as much as you can!

Only dip them in the sauce once!

4.Panoramic view of Osaka from Tsutenkaku tower

Tsutenkaku, Osaka’s symbolic tower, is registered as a national tangible cultural property.

It is said that the name of Tsutenkaku (通天閣 in Japanese) comes from the meaning of “A tall building leading to the heavens.”

Inside the tower, on the top floor, is an observatory from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city.  The drastic atmosphere change from daylight to nighttime almost makes you think you’re in two different places.

We definitely suggest seeing both faces of this unique district in Osaka.
