Treasure Hunting in the Heart of Shibuya: A Guide to the Shibuya Flea Market

Shibuya is a place where new trends and cultures are born every day. But did you know that twice a month, right in the middle of this buzzing city, an open-air treasure hunt appears — where you can discover one-of-a-kind antiques, handcrafted pieces, and vintage finds unlike anything else?
We headed out to the Shibuya Flea Market on Sunday, April 12th, and we’re here to share everything that made it such a great experience.

100 Stalls to Explore — A Walkable Antique Market in the City

The Shibuya Flea Market takes place on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month at the outdoor plaza of Sumitomo Fudosan Shibuya Garden Tower.

Step inside and you’ll find nearly 100 stalls lined up side by side — offering everything from Japanese and Western antiques, old tools, and vintage clothing, to handmade accessories and more.

Entry is free, so there’s no pressure — just an easy, relaxed atmosphere where time seems to slow down among the unique vendors and the stories behind their wares. Simply wandering from stall to stall is enough to fill you with a sense of discovery. And true to Shibuya’s character, the market draws plenty of international visitors too, with English conversations floating through the air and a wonderfully open, multicultural vibe all around.

Charming Japanese Folk Art: Akabeko and Kokeshi

Browsing the antique and vintage stalls, you’ll find not just European collectibles, but a surprising number of traditional Japanese items as well.

What caught our eye in particular were the akabeko (red papier-mâché cows) and kokeshi (traditional wooden dolls) — classic pieces of Japanese folk art.

For international visitors, these are a fascinating glimpse into Japanese craft tradition. But even for locals, they spark a warm sense of nostalgia — the kind that makes you think, “We used to have one of these at home.” And when you see them with fresh eyes, their simple expressions and rounded shapes feel unexpectedly endearing. It’s easy to find yourself thinking, “Wait — these are actually really cute.”

Not Just Antiques — Handcrafts, Incense, and Street Food Too

One of the things that makes this flea market special is that it’s not strictly about old things.

Scattered among the antique stalls, you’ll find handmade jewelry crafted with real care and intention, aromatic artisan incense, and all kinds of creative items that go well beyond the traditional antique market format.

Another thing that keeps each visit feeling fresh: the lineup of vendors changes every time. The wonderful maker or seller you discover today may not be there next month. That’s exactly why it’s worth trusting your instincts — if something catches your eye, hold onto that feeling.

And if you need a break, there are food trucks on-site too. Grab something to eat or drink and take your time making your way through the stalls. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable experience from start to finish.

The Magic of One-Time Encounters

You put something back on the shelf, walk away, and then find yourself circling back because you can’t stop thinking about it. That kind of moment — where an object stays with you — is what flea markets are really all about.

There’s also the joy of chatting with vendors directly. Asking “Where did this come from?” and hearing the story behind a piece — where it was sourced, what journey it made — is something you can only get from a face-to-face experience like this. Knowing the background of an object makes even its small chips and worn edges feel like character rather than flaws. That’s the beauty of finding something truly meant for you.

If this sounds like your kind of afternoon, the next market is scheduled for Sunday, April 26, 2026.

Since the Shibuya Flea Market runs every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month, it’s easy to work into a weekend itinerary. If you’re staying at HOTEL GRAPHY SHIBUYA, why not take a stroll and see what treasures you can find?
